In the first half of this year, 2.7 million tons of various cargoes were handled at Klaipėda Container Terminal (KCT), which is very similar to the same period in 2019. COVID-19 reduced trade links between Europe and Asia, thus resulting in container handling at the terminal being 5 per cent lower than last year and reaching 208,802 TEU.
In the second quarter of the year, the flow of general cargo intensified, 67.8 thousand tons of cargo were handled in May, and 254 thousand tons – since the beginning of the year. The overall cargo handling result was affected by the launch of the TT-Line ferry ro-ro line this year.
Meanwhile, JSC “Malkų Įlankos Terminalas“ (MĮT), despite the fact that the quay reconstruction works are currently underway and only ~ 35 percent of the quay capacity can be used, ended the first half of the year with the growth of handling volumes. During the six months of this year, 10 % more cargo was handled compared to 2019, which amounts to 540 thousand tons. MĮT’s revenue in the first half of the year was also record high.
According to the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, cargo handling in the eastern Baltic ports in the first half of the year decreased on average by about 7 per cent. Meanwhile, the terminals belonging to the Klaipėda Terminal Group, while maintaining the high quality of services and cargo diversification during the first half of this year, did not feel a drastic decrease in cargo flows due to the pandemic.
