On April 29 KKT container terminal welcomed a new STS gantry crane, the first of the two cranes ordered from KONECRANES. The second crane of the same type will be delivered in the middle of the year.
General Director of the company Mr. Vaidotas Šileika states, that this investment marks the beginning of a new stage in the development of KKT.
,,We will be able to service much larger ships, container line operators will be satisfied with the increased productivity of the terminal and accelerated ship handling, operators of new cranes will be able to enjoy much more comfortable working conditions. The reconstructed quay and a new generation of cranes will contribute to the increase of Klaipeda port capacity and open new opportunities for our clients.” – emphasizes V. Šileika.
Crane parameters were selected in view of larger ships tendency set in during the last few years, the new cranes will be ready to serve Post-Panamax class vessels. The just in time renovated terminal quay added new possibilities for mounting the powerful gantries and berthing much larger tonnage. The state-of the-art cranes will boost the vessel handling efficiency and shorten their turnaround time. Moreover, the electric-powered cranes will help KKT achieve the environmental goal of reducing the CO2 emission. It is estimated that replacement of mobile harbour cranes in sea-to-shore operations with zero-emission gantries will cut CO2 emissions from crane operations up to 70%.
Terminal development and investment programme includes acquisition of two more similar gantries in the coming years.
